2017 SUMMER
Recently I have been working on a series of paintings that involve a natural, shifting process, which I call “Patina Paintings”. Each evening, without conscious thought I use natural pigments, acrylic and bee's wax on wood panel to create a base. The next sunny day, this panel is then set outside. Looking at certain trees behind the temple, with a brush I then begin capturing the light and reflection of the light, as I see it in both my vision and mind.
On the hill behind the temple where I played every day as a child, the graveyard is surrounded and enveloped by leafy trees, which when looking up, changes the sky color to green. However, on May 29th, 1945. These trees, as well as our temple buildings and home were completely destroyed by fire in a massive, devastating air raid on Yokohama. the WAR.
“ Shiki” 色 ( visible objects in terms of Buddhism) is what I see appearing in the sunlight. I quickly and randomly paint the reflection of the sunlight on the trees and branches with the color of gold, representing the phenomenon of nature.
The base of the painting becomes the shadow of this “shiki” and the golden color becomes the light.
My "eye sight" is the way I experience and capture nature and my "mind sight” captures the phenomenon of transience and being in the universe. I experience the transience of nature and life as a meditation that is happening in front of me, into infinity. Similarly, my paintings are never finished, or completed works in the traditional sense, as the patina will constantly continue to change over time.
Using a gold made from brass and bronze powder as pigment I then add water and ammonium to liquefy and act as a catalyst for the shifting patina effect. Painting outside is a recent development for me, as my practise was almost always entirely studio based. However, now the heat and UV from the sun randomly changes the gold pigment to a light blue-green, with each changing minute.
As the trees sway in the wind and create flickering shadow and light, the golden trees on the panel begin changing with this green patina.

最近、私は「パティナ・ペインティング/緑青絵画」と名付けた、自然で移り変わるプロセスを伴う絵画のシリーズに取り組んでいます。 毎晩、意識することなく、ウッドパネルに天然顔料、アクリル、ミツロウを使い、ウッドパネルのベースを作ります。 翌日の晴れた日に、このパネルを外に出します。 お寺の裏の木々を見ながら、真鍮の金色の粉を使い筆を走らせ、光とその反射を視覚と心でとらえるのです。
幼い頃、毎日のように遊んだ寺の裏山は、墓地が木々に囲まれ、見上げれば空の色が緑に変わっている。 しかしこの美しい風景は、私が生まれる33年前の1945年5月29日、横浜大空襲により、この木々も、寺の建物も、家も、すべて焼失してしまったのです。
" 仏教でいうところの "目に見えるもの "である “色(shiki) "が、太陽の光に照らされて浮かび上がって見えるのです。 木や枝に反射する光を、自然界の現象を表す金色で素早くランダムに描きます。
絵の下地がこの「色」の影となり、金色が光となる。
私の「眼識」は自然を体験し捉えることであり、「心識」は宇宙のはかなさや存在という現象を捉えることです。 私は自然や人生のはかなさを、目の前で起こっている瞑想として、無限大に体験しているのです。 同様に、私の絵画は、時間とともにパティナ／緑青が常に変化し続けるため、決して完成された作品、つまり伝統的な意味での完成作品ではありません。
真鍮とブロンズの粉末から作られた金色を顔料として使い、水とアンモニウムを加えて液化させ、パティナ効果を変化させる触媒として作用させます。 私はスタジオで制作することが多かったので、外で絵を描くようになったのは最近のことです
今は太陽の熱と紫外線によって、金色の顔料が刻々と変化し、薄い青緑色に変化しています。 木々が風に揺れ、影と光が揺らぐと、パネル上の金色の木々がこの緑色のパティナで変化し始めるのです。
